Agroforestry in Spain and harvesting trials

How do we deploy agroforestry solutions in marginal land to drive a sustainable and profitable bioeconomy? MIDAS partners across Europe are providing the data and demonstrating the pathways to make it happen.

We are proud to highlight relevant updates  from two of our key partners who will be sharing their expertise at the webinar:

🌲 CIEMAT: Trees – specialty crops and oilseed crops

At the MIDAS demo site in Soria, CIEMAT is proving the viability of a robust, “triple-layer” agroforestry model that moves beyond traditional monocultures. This system strategically integrates:

  • Trees: Siberian Elm (Ulmus pumila) tailored for industrial particle board production.
  • Specialty Crops: Lavender, harvested for high-value essential oils.
  • Annual Crops: Safflower, Crambe, and Melilot for sustainable oilseed production.

This integrated strategy does more than just produce biomass; it optimizes land use efficiency, restores local biodiversity, and diversifies revenue streams for farmers within a single plot. Our expert speaker, Luis Saúl Esteban, recently sat down with local news to discuss the industrial potential of this site.

🔬 CREA-IT: Optimizing the Harvest

Efficiency is the backbone of any bio-based value chain. Our partners at CREA-IT recently published a peer-reviewed study in Agronomy focusing on harvesting operations within their agroforestry demo site in central Italy. Their research provides insights into mechanization and operational efficiency, and demonstrates that these integrated systems can achieve good yields and economic sustainability through optimized machinery use. Simone Bergonzoli will explain the findings and details during our webinar
